WELCOME TO THE COCHIN NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY

The Cochin Natural History Society is a non-profit making, non-political charitable institution registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955. This is a society of amateur naturalists who live in harmony with nature and seek to protect and to preserve the biodiversity and healthy natural environment. The mandate of the society is to undertake studies and documentation of biodiversity around us and to draw attention to the aesthetic, economic, scientific and conservation aspects.The society also intends to provide a platform to those who are concerned to come together and share, enlarge and correct our knowledge about Nature and its magnificence. Any person, who has a love, interest and commitment towards conservation of our biodiversity and natural history may become a member of the society*.

5th Kerala Bird Race Report


The Fifth   Kerala Bird Race has successfully concluded on 13th Nov.In the Kochi leg 95 particpants in 21 teams from Kochi,Kottayam and Thrissur  participated.They covered seashore, wetlands, marshy areas and dense forests of western ghats to record a total number of 206 species.
The team Sparrow led by Dr.Prasanth.S(with Madhukrishnan,Unnikrishnan  and Ajay Rajan) got the first prize with 135 species tally.The second prize was won by the team led by Prasanth Narayanan of Kottaym Nature Socity with s species tally of 126 species.Third prize was won by the team led by Ginu George(with Jai P Jacob,Shine K K, and Noble) by recording 102 species.
Turtle Dove recorded by the team Golden Oriole led by Dr.Ratheesh ,from Thrissur(KUVS) was selected as Bird Of the Day.
The areas covered by the teams include Pamba forests,24000 Kayal, Chennithala,Kumarakom,Kuttanad,Kalathara wetlands,Puthuvypin,Varapuzha,Pandiyolichal,Idamalayar,Malayattoor Kurisumudi,Kalamassery,Ambalamugal,Nedumbassery,Thrissur Kole wetlands,Chimmini, Koombazha forests,Peechi,KAU campus,KUVS Campus Muvattupuzha and Piravom Road area  etc……
The Chief Guests were, Adv.Jose Thettayil,Former Minister and Hon,ble  M L A Angamaly and Dr.B S Corrie, Addl PCCF of Kerala Forests.Mr.Sam Alex ,Vice President HSBC Bank also graced the occasion and spoke about the various conservation efforts of the bank as well as about the Bird Race.What is most heartening is that CNHS members won the First and Third prizes in the race.We will put up the full birds list soon on the blog.
